Cross-technology development environment

This is probably the most suitable place to post this trigger for discussion.

I'm currently helping out on a project to update our IT software catalog. In essence, I provide feedback on which software we, as technical SAP profiles, require on our corporate laptop to do our work.

I figured, why don't I just request an installation package for the latest tools in the shed?

- HANA Studio (& client)

- NetWeaver development studio (PO, formerly CE) containing BPM, WDJ, BRM, PI and other stuff

- ABAP tools (aka ABAP in eclipse)

- SAPUI5 package

These are the tools that we currently, or in the near future, will need to fulfil our role.

But I also had to create a request form for these tools, in which I would specify where they could find the installation packages, files etc...

I had to digg through service.sap.com for the latest CE version, download the studio and install it. Then I have to go to the developer center at SCN to download the hana studio and install it. And now I get stuck with two eclipse instances, both for SAP development! Where do I add the ABAP tools plugin and the SAPUI5 package?

Wouldn't it be infinitely easier, if there were public update sites for the extensions of HANA, ABAP, SAPUI5 (and the future app designer) and Java?

Then, we could just request the latest eclipse installation, configure a couple of update sites and install everything we needed. Right now, our software provisioning people have no idea how to package my requested software. They don't even have an OSS id, let alone that they can find the downloads for the CE dev environment.

As far as I know, it can't hurt to have the latest development studio against an older server, so having the newest tools in the shed shouldn't prevent us from working on older servers. (at least I hope so)

What say you? (arr)

ps: I did not mention mobile development (sybase), but that might just as well be available as well.
